Laura Ledet's European Adoption Story:

Laura Ledet’s European Hedgehog, Savannah, at Hedgehog Friends of Denmark.

June 18th, 2003

I just got the pictures of our Euro hedgehog from Kis, oh she is gorgeous!!!!!!!!! We have decided to name her Savannah, after a hedgehog I rescued years ago who's belly was all rotting with infection from being kept in a filthy cage. Savannah surprised me with 4 beautiful babies 3 weeks or so after I took her in (I never even knew she was pregnant) and one of those babies turned out to be my precious Tommy. :) Here is her story, as copied from the letter Kis sent me:

I have the most lovely little girl for you to adopt. She is such a cutie and such a "trouble-maker" (in a funny way). When she came to me June 16th she was in trouble. She had been seen laying in some high grass for TWO days. Then the people who spotted her got this great idea: Maybe there was something wrong with her since she wasn't walking anywhere...she also didn't show any interest in what was happening around her. They phoned me and shortly after they brought her to me. What a small girl (267 grams) for this time of year. She was born late last year and how that little sweetie survived the cold winter is amazing. There was a reason she wasn't walking. Around her left hind leg was a very fine thread (is that the word?) VERY tight. Her little foot was so swollen, and she was...of course very dehydrated and scared. She was lucky that no flies found her...so no fly eggs or maggots. Once the thread was carefully taken away and she had a nice bath and a lot to drink...she felt SO much better. She did have a bad diarrhea as well (still does ;-( ) I am moving her little foot several times a day, and it is looking very good. Yesterday she was 310 grams, but she is not eating as well as I would like her to.

Hi dear Friends,

Here she is the little princess. She is eating quite well now...but I will keep her on prednisolon a few days more. She is such a curious little girl...hehe. I pick herbs every night for her to explore. Life in a little box can be very boring when nature is your natual playground.

Sending you both warm thoughts,

Savannah and Kis
