Laura Wetterau's European Adoption Story:
Laura Wetterau’s European Hedgehog Lily, at Hedgehog Friends of Denmark.
June 10th, 2003
Hi Laura,
Your first hedgehog is a little girl.
She was brought to me 27'th of May.
A lady called: She had a hedgie running around in bright daylight on her lawn.
She had seen it for about a week... but the last two days it was just laying.
Huhmmmmmmm.
People should take them in right away when the see them.
From what she explained this was urgent.
I asked her if she could drive it to me as fast as possible.
Well she didn't really wanted to do that: "Can I pick it up"? She asked.
I told her of course and asked her to please bring it right away.
1 hour later they arrived...and this sounds crazy: 5 minutes later and the little one would have died.
She told me they (she had a girlfriend with her) checked on it several times during the drive and were sure it was dead.
Well: She was NOT. But unconscious and didn't respond at all.
I started "rubbing her" to get the blood circulating, after 1˝ hours she started to respond.
Se got a few drops of Chamomile tea...more gymnastic and rubbing.
The two ladies that brought her stayed and watched... they got totally fascinated by it.
After 3 hours I could tell them she now had a chance... but not a big one (it was getting very late so they drove home).
I spent the night rubbing, giving tea...rubbing.... finally two lovely dark eyes opened.
She was only 269 gram.
Now how she survived the winter on her own...is a wonder.
She got some Hills a/d via a syringe and more tea.
Before I - early in the morning tucked her in some nice warm wool I took away around 15 ticks from her eyes and ears.
It was a VERY tiered - but alive little girl when we were done.
She is now getting antibiotic (just in case I didn't get all heads from the ticks out).
I take her up for a syringe of tea every night but she started eating by herself now.
Her weight is now 460 grams... and she is a LOVELY girl.
AND the people who brought her ?
They have phoned every day to hear how she is doing and when I thing it is safe they would love to take care of her.
But she is not that far yet.
When she is sleeping, she is always laying with her head outside her sleepingbox as if she does NOT want to miss if anything exciting is going on...hehe.
Here are some pictures of her.
Enjoy ;-)
Thank you so much for your support.
Hugs,
Kis
