Emily Brown's European Adoption Story:

Emily Brown’s European Hedgehog, Euro, at The West Bretton Hedgehog Rescue.

June 18th, 2003

Hello Emily,

Thank you for adopting Euro, please find attached a photo & below his details, I will keep in touch & let you know how he progresses in the future.

10.6.03. I received a phone call from the vets to collect a small hedgehog, on arriving at the vets I examined Euro & when I placed him on the ground it was obvious he was dragging his back right leg. He had been examined under anaesthetic but this injury had not been picked up. I waited to see the vet to see what she suggested. It was decided that I would bring him back to the hogspital & build up his strength before we decided whether to operate or not.

On arrival back home, I weighed Euro noting he weighed only 476g which is underweight for an adult male, I then placed him in an incubator on a fleecy blanket & left him rest for a while to recover from the journey. I later examined him again & found a few ticks which I removed & then gave him a dose of wormer. All hedgehogs are wormed on arrival as they are always found to have a heavy burden of worms, which they get from eating slugs & snails. I also gave him a dose of Baytril antibiotic as his droppings were obnoxious.

11.6.03. Euro had been to the toilet during the night & he was passing slimy green dropping with blood. I again wormed him & gave him Baytril to cover any infection from the worms. I also gave him a dose of Levamisol which is a wormer for lungworms which is also a common problem among British hedgehogs, Euro is eating & drinking well, so on the whole I am very pleased with him.

13.6.03. Euro is eating & gaining weight nicely & has had his last wormer. His droppings are normal & he is very mobile.

18.6.03. Today I placed Euro on the floor to see how he was walking, he is now managing to use his damaged leg, so it would appear it is not broken, he has probably damaged the ligaments or muscles & these are now healing nicely because he is getting plenty of rest & regular feeds.

Euro came from the vets with no history, I do not know the circumstance of where he was found. I am hopeful of a full recovery & I will find a suitable release site should this happen. He is a nice quiet hog & a lovely patient.

Best Wishes,
Sonia

Hi Marian & Emily,

Hope you are both well. Here is the latest news of Kiwi & Euro. They have both done extremely well. Kiwi was no trouble at all just needed some TLC to get her back to health. Euro needed his course of antibiotics & wormer to sort out his disgusting droppings & the rest he got here enabled him to regain full use of his leg. I have attached a photograph of them both before being released. The boys who live at the house were thrilled to have 2 hedgehogs brought to their garden. Kiwi on being released decided she wasn't hanging around & immediately squeezed through the fence into the adjoining garden, she didn't even stop to wave goodbye. Euro hid behind a bush, waiting for us to leave so he could investigate his new home. I hope & pray they will make the best of their second chance & live a full & happy hedgie life.

Thank you for your support, it has been a great boost both morally & financially.

Sonia
